2008/05/11 – Aiguille du Chardonnet, South Couloir photo01 (linecha.JPG Kb)
The South couloir seen from the summit of Aiguille d’Argentière. There are a couple of variant lines from the summit and the Forbes ridge. This line is the most skiable and common one. photo02 (DSC06975fix.jpg Kb)
We started from Grands Montets at around 06.00 o’clock. The descent down the Rognon glacier was interesting… (Refrozen deep old tracks) The climb up from the Argentière glacier to the start of the couloir is 675 vertical meters and it took us two hours to get there. photo03 (DSC06984fix.jpg Kb)
Climbing up the couloir(535m). The snow was hard and easy to climb. photo04 (DSC06995fix.jpg Kb)
My legs were a little bit heavy on the way up. The day before we climbed the North face of Aiguille du Midi by the Eugster diagonal route. (see the “climbing”section) It took me two and a half hours to climb the couloir. photo05 (DSC07005.jpg Kb)
The top section of the couloir. I’m at the top of the right branch. I started the descent at about 09.45 o’clock. photo06 (DSC07048.jpg Kb)
Further down. The couloir is between 50°-55° degrees. photo07 (DSC07048fix.jpg Kb)
It was lots of old tracks in the couloir so the skiing was sometimes quite technically. photo08 (DSC07088.jpg Kb)
After the descent we continued to the Plines hut via Col du Chardonnet.(swiss side). We had a very nice afternoon and evening there. Early next morning we went to the East couloir of Aiguille Chardonnet.
