2008/04/13 - Aiguille d'Argentière, Couloir Y

photo01 (y.JPG Kb)

We had very good snow conditions today in couloir Y on the South/East face of Aiguille d'Argentière. We skied the left branch and it was powder in it from the start to the point where the two couloirs meet up. The lower section was a little bit crusty but ok. We did a rappel throught the bergschrund(30m, to icy and narrow). We started from the top of la Herse lift the day before and climbed to the top of Grands Montets. It took about two hours(+730vertical meters). Very nice place to sleep by the way... The day after we started 05.00 o'clock. You can spare about 60min if you do a hight traverse above the rognon, highly crevassed but quite easy if there is tracks. 775 vertical meters from the Argentière glacier to the bergschrund(2hours45min). 540m climbing in the couloir(2h30). The descent to Lognon is 1930m. This is a excellent steepski course! Sometimes it's possible to do it in one day. But be careful, it faces South-East and catches the sun early in the morning.
